General S. G. Griffin
Simon Goodell Griffin rose from being a private, to the
rank of Major General, the highest rank obtained by a New Hampshire soldier
during the war. He was never wounded during the war, even though seven of
his horses were shot out from under him.
After the war, he returned to Keene and lived in a house on West St., which
later became the site of the Post Office and now houses the offices of the N. H.
School Administrative Unit 29. Gen. Griffin was active in Keene for many
years and wrote the first definitive history of the Elm City. Camp 10 was
chartered in 1903.
